The FBI BAR — Colt Monitor M80In 1931 Colt Firearms introduced the Colt Monitor. The Colt Monitor was a modified version of the Browning Automatic Rifle adapted for shoulder firing and marketed towards law enforcement. Major adaptations included removal of the bipod, the addition of a pistol grip, the shortening of the stock and barrel, as well as the installation of a Cutts compensator to reduce muzzle climb. About 125 would be produced. They became most popular with the newly created Federal Bureau of Investigation, who needed more than Colt Detective Snub Nosed revolvers to fight Tommy Gun wielding gangsters. 90 would be purchased by the FBI, while 11 would be issued to the Treasury Department. The rest were sold to police, private security firms, banks, and state prisons. -- source link
