So apparently the reason this regeneration was so freaky and weird was because the Master was using the psychic link between the Doctor and Kamelion to interfere with the Doctor’s regeneration (don’t ask me how). This manifested as a house caught in a blizzard within the Doctor’s mind, tempting the Doctor to settle from his wandering and stay at home, representing death. He almost gave in, but he subconsciously reached out with help from Kamelion to all of his companions, and Nyssa’s husband had a machine to enhance dreams. Using this, Nyssa was able to manifest at the house and free the Doctor from the trap. All of the companions then lent the Doctor the strength to regenerate, complete with a new watcher clothed in white. Big Finish goes hardcore when they make audio stories. -- source link
