critique doesnt have to be positive to hold true, and critique doesnt have to be positive to be taken seriouslylong thing below i think the main problem with people taking a long time to improve is that theyre playing it too safe when it comes to art… dude, negative crit isnt a bad thing. wouldnt you rather know exactly whats wrong with your art so you can tackle it than vaguely know? sometimes positive crit is condescending/sends mixed messages too “why criticize the tutorial makers rather than the ones looking to improve?” because the ones trying to improve arent the ones making flawed tutorials to begin with, and theyre getting the runt-end of this, basically. Yeah, theyre misguided, but more-so are the people who think they have enough skill to show pointers to people even though they don’t exactly know the material either. and also, if it works good for her “style” does that mean it’ll work for everyone else’s? everyone improves differently, but people havent been going back to the same art textbooks and methods for /decades/ for no reason here. theyre time tested, and leagues better than what tumblr usually puts out. i’d rather trust someone whos been studying anatomy for years and years than take “pointers” from a teen who draws fandom stuff. yes, experiment, try new things, pick and choose but don’t steep /yourself/ so low to the point where you take methods from anyone but the best. don’t steep so low to the point where you only take positive crit to able to take them seriously. this is why i hate the “muh style” stuff because people would rather praise mediocre work than actively point out flaws so that they get better. i guess because theyre scared of hurting people’s feelings? feelings dont last nearly as long as art does. (ps i dont really buy in “maybe art is just their hobby and theyre not seeking to actively improve” because if they didnt want to improve they wouldve just stuck to stickmen or chibis or some shit) -- source link
