birdsbikesbotany: Here’s a native terrarium that’s about a year old. Made with the traditional layers of gravel, substrate divider (this one’s plastic wrap with holes poked through it), pure charcoal chunks. “Native” terrariums like this one typically differ from other terrariums because they use materials collected in one location- this one’s substrate is earthy, loamy soil from the forest floor, and two species of moss from the same area. The scape originally was centered around a small gnarled piece of wood, but it’s since been overtaken and possibly broken down. A mushroom has popped up here occasionally (sign of a healthy terrarium) and it’s inhabited by a few species of springtails and possibly a few other arthropods. During the first few months of its life there was a small weevil-like beetle, but I haven’t seen it in a while. I do maintenance (trimming, wiping down front glass) on this one about every two months, as the moss grows really aggressively. -- source link
