I wrote poetry for a blonde, curly haired girl who reminded me of the princesses in the Irish fairy tales that my mother would read to me before bed. She crumpled up the paper and threw it in the trash before going to collect her snack. The longer I knew of and denied my own lesbianism, the more it came out in my art. I wrote a high fantasy short fiction collection throughout my entire high school career and drew pictures to go along with the story. I never showed anyone my work, especially my mother. The whole book was about lesbians who died for their love, lesbians who were beaten and struggled in silence as their want consumed them.
