Signals Through the Noise series statement: There is a dark noise that pollutes our daily lives and bombards our senses. Negativity and divisiveness are growing. With the proliferation of social media, hate and darkness are mindlessly or malevolently shared with one click, thus amplified and spread with lightning speed. When journaling concepts for new paintings I noticed a few ideas recurring. Could I make work about love over hate; peace instead of conflict; empathy and understanding over fear and judgment? How to do that visually and without sentimentality? In observational painting, there is a light phenomenon that a strong spotlight will overpower the ambient light in the same space. I wanted to paint a positive light so strong that it could overpower the negative ambient light pollution we are experiencing in society. I went about making the paintings and realized in doing so that the series Signals Through the Noise was born. Amid the noise, signals of light are to be found. My favorite quote from Martin Luther King, Jr says it well, “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” I’ve made this work with the meager tools I have and in the painted visual language I know best.
