lichenaday:Aspicilia cupreaimages: source | sourceAspicilia cuprea didn’t get a fair shake with my first post, I’ll be the first to admit it. So here’s some important info that may help you to appreciate this lichen even more! 1. Her common name is “copper sunken disc lichen.” Copper is my favorite color so there you go. 2. She only grows in California–all the way from the northern coast down to Baja, and into the valleys and Sierra Nevada mountains. Just a total Cali girl through and through3. Her color changes according to her habitat. Sun-exposed specimens tend to vary in color from tan to brown to russet, and shaded specimens tend towards gray and gray-green in coloration. 4. She’s a dom, aka, a dominant species on the siliceous boulders and rocky outcrops where she grows. You can see that in the large swaths she takes up in all these pictures of saxicolous lichen communities. Look at her, not afraid to take up space. Anyway, I hate it when I don’t have time to write all about the lichens I love on every post. Sometimes there just isn’t a lot of info out there, and sometimes it’s because I don’t have time (was too busy getting a root canal yesterday to wax poetic about A. cuprea), but I feel guilty either way. So this makes me feel better (I mean not 100%, because still recovering from a root canal) and brightens your day too! info and images: source | source -- source link
