The great thing about this journey I’m on, is that through photo shoots and seeing my body from all angles, I’m able to finally see myself in my true form. In the beginning I found that particularly hard. During my many years battling with eating disorders and diet pill addiction, I had a very warped view of my body. It was mostly based on what I thought my body looked like rather than what it actually looked like. I shied away from being photographed from behind, or at angles that I considered highly unflattering. Any photos that I thought made me look voluptuous were immediately destroyed or hidden away but almost always accompanied by secret tears and feelings of shame, guilt and self loathing. I’d set myself unrealistic targets to lose weight and go to even more aerobics classes and sessions at the gym, telling myself I could truly live once I’d accomplished my goals. Now I try to look at myself with kind eyes. It’s not always easy but I’ve come to realise that often the things we despise most about our physical form, are the parts of us that are revered by others and seen as beautiful and desirable. But I’ve discovered more than anything, that the one part of us that determines who and what we really are and shows our true worth, is not the physical shell that we inhabit at all but the part of us that resides within.
