The three #newspecies of chameleon we described today, Calumma ratnasariae (pictured), C. tjiasmantoi, and C. eliminate, all face an uncertain fate: their forests in Madagascar are being burned and chopped down to make way for subsistence agriculture that is barely keeping the populous of Madagascar alive. This wildlife crisis is a humanitarian crisis too, and right now neither crisis is being adequately addressed. Naming species is a necessary first step toward our hope of knowing what there is to save, and coordinating efforts to protect it.
