Gathering Summer Flowers in a Devonshire Garden (1893-1910), by J.W. WaterhouseBesides the oriental, classical and symbolist paintings, Waterhouse also painted portraits and half a dozen of contemporaneous subjects. Above work was painted when he visited his sister-in-law in Croyde, Devonshire. From the fact that these works were never exhibited, one can conclude that they were painted for friends and relatives. The portrayed woman is probably Waterhouse’s wife, Esther. Her sister, Emily, was married to the landscape painter Peregrine Feeney. -- source link
