USAF M4 Survival Rifle,Manufactured by Harrington and Richardson, the M4 survival rifle is meant to be compact and light, and was issued to pilots during World War II and Korea. Its purpose is not for combat, but rather as a survival rifle for downed pilots. A down pilot could use this rifle to hunt small game for survival food. Chambered in .22 hornet, the M4 is mostly made of stamped sheet metal, has a telescoping buttstock, and a wire pistol grip. Because of its lightweight design it only weighs four pounds and the barrel is only 14 inches long. The barrel can also be detached from the rifle for storage and transport. When the Air Force decommissioned these rifles, they sold them on the military surplus market. However, the Air Force actually got in trouble with the law when it was realized that the 14 inch barrel fell short of National Firearms Act regulations. In order to own one a person must purchase a special tax stamp. -- source link
