The zebra used to have a close relative called the quagga. The quagga only had stripes on its head and neck, not on its entire body like the zebra. It was hunted to extinction, and the last member of the species died in captivity in 1883. It actually became the first extinct animal to have its DNA studied when genetic material was extracted from mounted specimens in 1984! -- source link
