Essex, United Kingdom Essex is a county northeast of London. The name Essex originates in the Anglo-Saxon period of the Early Middle Ages and the Kingdom of Essex. Ēastseaxe (“East Saxons”), was one of the seven traditional kingdoms of the so-called Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy. I cant find an exact date of introduction of the flag, but the three Seaxes (Saxon swords or dagger) were already a sign of the Ancient kings of Essex, that ruled in the 9th century.  -- source link
