Numancia, by Alejo Vera The Celtiberian oppidum of Numantia was attacked more thanonce by Roman forces, but the Siege of Numantia refers to the culminating andpacifying action of the long-running Numantine War between the forces of theRoman Republic and those of the native population of Hispania Citerior. TheNumantine War was the third of the Celtiberian Wars and it broke out in 143 BC.A decade later, in 133 BC, the Roman general and hero of the Third Punic War,Scipio Aemilianus Africanus, subjugated Numantia, the chief Celtiberian city.Conditions inside the city were brutal. The Numantians were reduced to cannibalism in an attempt to survive. Many individuals opted to kill themselves and large areas of the city were burned. The Numantians knew that if they surrendered that they would be sold into slavery. They were correct. When the city surrendered nine months after the siege began, the surviving residents were sold into slavery by the Romans. -- source link
