whatthefoucault:So my ENTIRE IMAGINATION HAS BEEN CONSUMED BY THE PIRATE SHOW, and the way I responded to this was by latching onto this one line Wee John says in the first episode about how he used to help his mother make dresses.Specifically, my first thought was that Mrs. Feeney might have been a mantua-maker. Mantua making was one of the few female-dominated professions of the period, and the garments these craftswomen made would have been made to measure by draping and fitting the fabric directly over the wearer’s body. So why is Wee John having a fitting? Well, maybe Mrs. O’Flynn needs a new gown at short notice for her daughter’s wedding but she’s been called away on an emergency and she has about the same measurements as Wee John here, who’s acting as a stand-in. Maybe Mrs. Feeney is giving a practical demonstration on what to feel for when fitting a mantua. Maybe he just wants to feel elegant and this striped fabric is totally his colour. Maybe I just thought it was cute. -- source link
