30 Days First Age of Arda Challenge  15- What was the saddest moment from the Nirnaeth Arnoediad? You all thought I was going to say when Fingon is killed and Maedhros can’t get to him in time, didn’t you? The better half of my OTP killed by Balrogs. No.The worst, saddest, most horrible part of The Battle of Unnumbered Tears (which, okay, really? You’re making me pick one tragedy of “unnumbered” tragedies??) is Gwindor. Sibling feels. Of the worst kind.Gwindor is an elf. His brother Gelmir was captured by Morgoth 17 years before. Gwindor is in Fingon’s army, who are waiting for Maedhros and in the meantime hiding from Morgoth, so Morgoth taunts them to make them come out to play:The orcs drag Gelmir out in front of the armies, having blinded him, and proceed to cut off his arms and legs and leave him to die, all within sight of Gwindor. (Elves, for the record, are tougher than humans, and this is a guy who survived 17 years of captivity and torture and blinding, so Gelmir probably took a long time to die.) Gwindor (understandably) flips his shit with grief and rage and charges into Morgoth’s ranks, killing a bunch of enemies and forced Fingon to commit his forces to battle too early. But Gwindor is taken alive. He clearly wanted to die and hoped he would die, especially after witnessing something like that, and having reacted as he did. But no. He is enslaved and tortured by the same guy who brutally murdered his brother in front of him. Also, Gwindor later escapes Angband only to lose his hand, but is rescued by Beleg, only to see Turin kill Beleg, and then he falls in love with Finduilas, only to have her fall in love with Turin instead–all before he is (finally, poor darling) killed in battle.A Note on the Image: From LOTR Wikia Commons, manipulated by me since it is (allegedly) misnamed anyway (though I’m not sure it is, this might be Celebrimbor…hmmm). Edit: Totally Celebrimbor.
