The jersey devil is among the very few representatives of Wyvernidae in the new world. It has the largest and most complex ears of all dragons, which it uses much like the aye-aye to listen for insects, its primary food source, in rotting wood. They are nocturnal and extremely reclusive, but may approach human settlements when food is scarce. They are opportunistic feeders, and have been reportedly observed scavenging carcasses and even digging for nutrient rich roots as it stocks up for the winter. Large individuals stand up to 5 feet tall when balanced on its tiptoes, but average closer to 4 feet. When moving quickly can clear several hundred feet in a wing-assisted leap. They are not capable of powered flight. While not actually aggressive towards humans, they are capable of emitting a fearsome screech as both a warning and a form of communication with other individuals. Little is known of their original range. Sadly, this strange, unique creature is believed to be extinct in the wild, with the last confirmed sighting sometime in 1909. -- source link
