Doing some dragon wing anatomy sketches because why the heck not.Something that bugs me about dragon designs is how often the wings are clearly completely unsuited for flying, even on a small animal. Tiny wings that seem to only go from the fingers to the elbow, all sorts of ragged holes in the membrane, tiny spindly arms, that sort of thing. Wings are really complex pieces of anatomy, and the “mangled bat wing” look always manages to break my suspension of disbelief, especially when attached to something that’s supposed to be longer than a semi-trailer.So here’s my suggestion: base the shape of big dragon wings more on the wings of birds and pterosaurs, rather than bats. The biggest bats have wingspans of about a metre, whereas the largest birds ever to fly were like seven times that size, and the biggest pterosaurs got to the size of small aircraft. Therefore it would stand to reason that the sort of wing shapes that birds and pterosaurs have is better suited to keeping a large flying animal in the air than something like a bat’s wing. These wings, in particular, were based on the wing shapes of large soaring birds like condors. Paying attention to biology really does make creature designs look much more believable and real. -- source link
