New Arrivals: Original photograph of William "Big Bill" Haywood and his co-worker in the court (George Speed member of I.W.W. Ex Cmttee). A courtroom portrait probably taken shortly after Haywood’s conviction, along with 100 other IWW members, on charges of espionage stemming from the union’s vocal opposition to America’s entry into WW1. Haywood would jump bail in 1921, fleeing to the Soviet Union where he remained until his death in 1928. Haywood is seen here in the company of George Speed, Chairman of the IWW Executive Committee and, like Haywood, one of the IWW’s founding members. A rare portrait of Haywood; not one we have seen reproduced in publication and evocative of a pivotal moment in the labor leader’s career. -- source link
