vculibraries:Feeling the cold? Perhaps you need an Avondale Heating Stove. “Leaving the Wreck” and “In Winter Quarters” trade cards published by J.H.Bufford’s Sons in the late 19th century. Both of these items may be found in the Charles E. Brownell Collection of Architectural and Decorative Ephemera (M439), Special Collections and Archives, James Branch Cabell Library. With all the excitement surrounding the discovery of Ernest Shackleton’s ship “Endurance,” we thought we’d share these icy trade cards again, though we’re not certain when they were printed or what shipwreck they depict. In January, 1915, the Endurance became trapped in ice, which began to slowly crush the wooden ship. On Oct. 27, 1915, Shackleton gave the order to abandon the Endurance, and one month later the ship sank into the Weddell Sea. -- source link
