Bhagat Singh Thind enlisted in the U.S. Army during World War I, and when he returned, tried to become a naturalized American citizen. The Supreme Court ruled in United States vs. Bhagat Singh Thind in 1923, however, that Indians were not qualified to become citizens because they were not “Caucasian” (sic). He applied for, and received, citizenship three times, but the first two times a higher court revoked his citizenship due to his ethnicity.Singh remained in the U.S. as a graduate student, earning a Ph.D. and writing on Sikh religious philosophy and American transcendentalism. While a student, he successfully became a U.S. citizen. -- source link
