Have you ever wondered how and when young children begin to understand gender? Gender identity—the sense of oneself as male, female, fluid or transgender—is a topic that’s coming more and more to the forefront, and here in Education we are thinking of ways to use art as a starting point for talking about gender identity. This month, we are holding a series of educational events for children, their families, and educators to think beyond the gender binary. The series starts Saturday, October 17 with an interactive family program. Along with an adult companion, children 5 and under take part in storytime and pretend play; children 6 to 12 are introduced to the language of identity. Families are then invited to attend a reception organized by the Ackerman Institute’s Family & Gender Program immediately following the programs. On Saturday, October 24, we host a panel discussion inspired by the work of photographer Zanele Muholi and her current exhibition, Isibonelo/Evidence. In this multigenerational conversation, panelists talk about the importance of positive models of multiple gender expressions, as well as the intersections of gender with other identities markers such as race, religion, and family. The series concludes on Sunday, October 25 with a workshop led by NYC Early Childhood Professional Development Institute in which parents and educators gain the tools to understand and support gender development in young children.Join us in dialogue that explores and affirms shifting notions of gender. All events are free with museum admission, but space in the workshops is limited.
