Vantage points—where the photographer chooses to place the camera—have the power to make sports photographs exhilarating and dramatic. Photography extends vision, and sports photographers are experts at moving and placing their cameras where they can achieve the kinds of bold and unusual perspectives spectators cannot obtain themselves. Many photographers stop the body in motion—it is what sports photographers do. But Rainer Martini sculpts the body with light and in doing so isolates the movement to its most sublime elements. He captures bodily shapes, from a muscular leg to a bent thumb, that continually surprise and seduce the viewer. The photographs are motionless yet fluid. Rainer Martini (German, born 1948).
