amnhnyc:This 1959 photo from the archives features Allosaurus and a friendly visitor in the Museum’s old “Brontosaurus Hall.” At an average length of 28 feet and weighing an estimated 1.5 tons, Allosaurus was a mighty predator and theropod that lived 156-145 million years ago. Its dagger-like teeth were serrated on the front and back, though its bite force was surprisingly only on par with smaller living mammals like leopards. Now on view in the Hall of Saurischian Dinosaurs, Allosaurus is depicted feeding on a carcass of another dinosaur whose bones are marked by grooves—potentially scars from an Allosaurus attack.
