One of them was struggling with her walker as her counterpart washed and dried her hands. I did my best to slip by them and into a stall, afraid of kickstarting a ‘This is the women’s room’ confrontation I didn’t have time to finish. “Let her by,” the hand-drying woman goaded as I edged past, “…she looks so nice.” “She does,” her friend answered, a kind murmur of approval that warmed me from my blistered toes to my blush-reddened ears. I laughed in my stall, calling a surprised “…thank you”, their way as they exited. I looked at my reflection before leaving the bathroom, an unstoppable grin emblazoned on my face. I chuckled again as I lifted my briefcase back onto my shoulder, emboldened and elated by the women’s unexpected reaction. I checked myself out in the mirror one last time, snapping a quick picture to show my friend.
