On August 4, 1892, someone crept up on sleeping Andrew and Abby Borden in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts, and murdered them with a hatchet. Andrew Borden had been so brutally attacked that his skull was smashed and one of his eyes split in half. Circumstantial evidence pointed to Andrew’s daughter Lizzie Borden, who was fighting with her father and stepmother over real estate. Shortly before the attack, Lizzie had attempted to buy cyanide from the local druggist. And the family had recently fallen ill after eating what Abby Borden suspected was a poisoned meal. Lizzie Borden was found not guilty on June 20, 1893, but no other suspects were ever arrested or tried. -- source link
