After 8 hours of climbing, too many hours of rappelling, what felt like a never-ending 5 mile hike out, and extreme luck with the weather, Amanda, Shannon (Amanda’s sister) and I successfully summited the Petit Grepon! . These are our happy faces. Matt’s been wanting to do this climb since at least 2010. We attempted it two years ago and bailed due to weather (see our previous post for more details there). This time, our climb went smoothly, with a bit of spice thrown in, pretty much standard for alpine climbs. Shannon dropped her ATC after the first rappel thanks to an over-eager climber above us who tugged on our rap ropes as she was removing it (not cool!!!) so we ended up with two of us simul-rapping (one on a gri gri) for 4 200’ raps. Then our ropes got stuck on the 2nd and last raps. Despite these challenges, we were able to get the ropes unstuck, and made it safely back to the ground before dark. . Succeeding at your goals is extremely rewarding, but pushing the limits with someone you love and succeeding together is even more magical. Here’s to many more summits and sunsets.
