Benito Mussolini in Libya, 1939. Note he is being escorted by two men carrying fasces, an axe bundled in sticks. The fasces was an ancient ceremonial symbol originating with the Roman Republic, symbolizing the state’s power to of life and death. Mussolini chose to revive much of the symbolism from Ancient Rome, the fasces among them. Thus Mussolini’s political movement was called fascism. -- source link
