Camilla Rodolfi - Leader of the women of VigevanoIn 1449, the city of Vigevano, Italy, was besieged by the warlord Francesco Sforza (husband of another warrior woman featured on this blog: Bianca Maria Visconti). Many men lost their lives in trying to protect the city.Seeing this, the townswomen decided that they weren’t going to let Vigevano fall. They took arms and fought valiantly on the walls. Their leader was Camilla Rodolfi, who belonged to a powerful merchant family among those who governed the city. According to legend, Francesco Sforza himself was wounded by a spear thrown by one of these women.Their courage helped the defenders to keep fighting. However, the city ultimately fell into Sforza’s hands. Camilla and some of the female fighters survived the battle. Francesco Sforza reportedly liked to have the former women defenders parade in full armor with Camilla at their head. Today, a street in Vivegano is named after Camilla.
