The only compelling character in the greatest first half of a sci-fi film of all time. The intergalactic division of labour and interplanetary class struggle; the bio-powered ‘habitat’ of Elysium and a perfect example of discipline via (lack of) health care; and a samurai sword wielding mercenary paid to do the dirty work of corporate imperialism. And then it all collapses into a dull finale/resolution. This is a tendency which emerges again and again in science fiction cinema; establishing a complex arrangement of concepts and then failing to actualise the potential of any of them. But it also creates a strange kind of bliss, because for at least 40 minutes the spectator is propelled on a wave of potential which is enjoyed partly in the knowledge that soon it will all be squandered in spectacle. -- source link
