Wallace CreekA few weeks ago we shared this aerial photo of Wallace Creek, a stream in central California that runs across the San Andreas Fault: http://tmblr.co/Zyv2Js1vcF0oF. This shot captures that same creek up close.Wallace Creek is found in the Carrizo Plain National Monument. As shown by the lack of vegetation, this part of California doesn’t get much water, but when it does it is at risk of flash flooding. The edges of this creek were likely originally carved during high-flow flood events, but when the fault moves it offsets the stream edges right into the flow path. Subsequent floods after the most recent quake followed the newly-broken stream path and reworked the stream edges into a smoothed, well-sculpted flow path, just with an angular jog right in the middle.-JBBImage credit: Don Barretthttps://flic.kr/p/69gwkS -- source link
