On this day (September 18) in 1870, the Old Faithful geyser was discovered by the Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition. Old Faithful is one of many geysers in what is now Yellowstone National Park. In his journal, Nathaniel Langford wrote that Henry Washburn chose the name Old Faithful because the geyser had consistent eruptions every 60 to 65 minutes which rose to 80 or 100 feet.Images from: Lossing, Benson John.
