Monica Majoli, Blueboy (Ted 1), Japanese woodblock print, Edition of 10Via: Art+Culture ProjectsMonica Majoli’s figurative work leverages issues of sexuality, mortality, and transcendence. Carved and printed in a traditional Japanese studio, Majoli’s recent series of woodblock prints depict images of men in various states of undress. Featuring luminous watercolor studies of males contoured in stark white, Majoli’s ‘white-line’ process refers to a unique style of printmaking developed in Provincetown, Massachusetts during the early 20th century. Extracted from Blueboy, a gay pornographic magazine that emerged in the 1970s, whose namesake pays homage to the famous portrait by eighteenth century painter Thomas Gainsbourgh, Majoli repurposes explicit ephemera to investigate themes of intimacy and identity inherent within classical portraiture. -- source link
