Igneous barren, Devil’s honeycomb, a large bald section of the intrusive plutonic activity that formed 1.485 billion years ago is one of the largest intact sections of igneous barren exposure in MO, The St. Francois Mountains are almost dead center among the Ozark plats and feature much of the same commonplace barren species that the wildcat chert glades, Witchita, and the other older mountains have (Ouachita, Arbuckle Mountains). I say older mountains in the grand scheme of things as they all have landforms older in formation than MT. Mitchell mountain in the Blue Ridges. Though the greater formations are usually clumped together. Arbuckle is 1.3 billion years old where as MT. Mitchell is 1.2 Billion; though, with that said, parts of Africa’s greenstone range are the oldest on the planet next to parts of the USA and the artic with 3+billion year old exposures. Which I find insane. Anyway, these are really cool Rhyolite barrens and hopefully i’ll be able to pull some images of the flame flower blooms from my phone since my camera ran out of battery early on. -- source link
