Before and after Today is the 11th day of the 11th month. This is the anniversary of the end of the First World War, the Great War. Today has many names around the world: Armistice Day, Veterans Day, Remembrance Day, Poppy day. All of these names commemorate the end of the supposed “War to end all Wars”, which of course was anything but. These images are before and after photos taken by the Royal Flying Corps of a village in Belgium known as Passchendaele (shared later by the BBC). This town and road crossing was the site of a 1917 offensive led by the British against the Germans, a battle today commonly known as the 3rd battle of Ypres. We recently covered the concept of “Bombturbation” (https://www.facebook.com/TheEarthStory/posts/590996084294773). I think this image highlights that concept. The images are slightly off position but the original road crossing can still be recognized. -JBB Image credit: BBC, shared via:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Passchendaele_aerial_view.jpghttp://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1325536/Aerial-photo-shows-Passchendaele-obliteration-World-War-I.htmlhttp://blekko.com/wiki/Battle_of_Passchendaele?source=672620ff -- source link
