doctorwookie: newguineatribalart:New Guinea shields The U.S. Library of Congress has the original sterograph, which is captioned, “One Kind of Watercraft In Which the New Guinea Cannibal Paddles to Neighboring Islands” and dated 1919.I was lucky enough to travel in a traditional outrigger canoe in Papua New Guinea last weekend, as a way of moving up creeks, through the mangrove forest, and onto Taiof Island. While on the outrigger, I photographed another similar one on the shore (below) with the paddle standing upright. After hiking across that island, we took another outrigger to a smaller islet that had coastlands that might not have been so rich with life but were easier for this Homo sapiens to walk on (Taiof Island is the larger one on the left-side of the horizon.) -- source link
