suneeateer: lesbianflaghistory: suneeateer: lesbianflaghistory: Seeing a lot of misinformation flying around regarding lesbian flags this year, particularly the pink one, so here’s my attempt to set the record straight! FAQ/Common Misconceptions and Sources are listed below the cut - if anything in this post contradicts what you’ve heard, I’d encourage you to read through them before responding. Please DO NOT promote flag redesigns on this post :) Keep reading creator of the pink one was a terf which is why its being cycled out. the op’s comment on that being a misconception seems like theyre just brushing it off…interesting As stated below the cut, I welcome proof to the contrary on this - if you have any, please send it my way! As it stands, I have mentioned that there are a few instances of casual cissexism on her social media (which is an established term, and not an attempt to minimize anything, as your tags suggest). This is not, by itself, an indication that she was or is a TERF, which is a specific reactionary ideology with its own set of talking points and intentions. I cannot find any evidence that she subscribes or subscribed to that, hence I suspect this claim - which was not one of the initial criticisms of the flag - started as a rumour. But again, feel free to correct me on this! Here’s the article which is what started the whole thing: https://medium.com/@lydiandragon/a-lesbian-flag-for-everyone-cef397b89459 Natalie then went back to her original blog post (found through the link) and edited it accusing Lydia of attacking her, claims its all wrong, etc. She put that above her original post which details a date she went on with an Asian woman. The creator called her date ugly, and said that “asian women weren’t her type.” (She’s just….really not a good person, yikes.) That kind of thing is debated on whether or not it’s considered racist. If you don’t wanna date someone, don’t date them, but when it gets to the point where you have to say “certain race isn’t my type” then uh,,, that’s racist. On her post she claims to be Southeast Asian, I would never even try to question someone else’s race. But one race can absolutely be racist toward their own race. My own father is an example of this, but I digress, that’s not what we’re talking about. The thing I want to point out the most about that post, is that Natalie took the time to disagree with everything Lydia accused her of…..except the accusation of her being transphobic. And then…there’s….this: https://thislesbianlife.wordpress.com/2010/08/04/why-do-men-think-lesbians-arent-lesbians/ (Ignoring the fact that yeah her post is true, most movies that feature wlw romance are poorly done and intended for the male gaze, but the penis centric talk is what we’re talking about here.) This is not “casual cissexism” From her first paragraph, it’s very obvious that she ties together having a penis with being a man. This is just 100% trans exclusionary. That post is from 2010, so if you can find something new that shows she’s grown from that point of her life and isn’t trans exclusionary anymore, I’d love to see it! Otherwise, there’s your sources. Edit because I forgot to add earlier: Cancel culture is toxic and all, but when most of the community is saying something, there’s probably good reason to believe them. Asking for proof is just a slap in the face to all the people she’s hurt. Respectfully, I need to disagree on a few key points. For one, while Lydia’s article is what propelled some of the criticism into wider knowledge, it is not what “started the whole thing”, given that it was published over a year after online discussions regarding the lipstick flag’s creator had begun.I’d also like to note that all the posts you are talking about are listed in my sources, which is to say that I have read all of them. It seems unlikely that Natalie completely accepted the accusation of transphobia, given that she highlighted the fact that she worked with trans youth in her (erratically written) response to Lydia’s article.I use the term “casual cissexism” in relation to the start of this blog post:This is because, when read in context, it seems apparent that Natalie is not intending to talk about trans women. She is, rather, conflating genitals with gender in the context of talking about cis men (she then goes on to critique the portrayal of lesbians in media). I’m not saying that this is correct or a perfect thing to do, but I am saying that it does not appear to be intentionally angled towards trans people, and she is not employing the same narrative, phrases or terminology that TERFs use when they talk about trans women. To clarify, I am not mounting any sort of defense of Natalie in terms of whether or not she harbours transphobia, be it overt or implicit. I am defending my statement that there is no evidence to suggest she is a TERF, which is - again - a specific reactionary ideology with specific motivations and talking points. Not everyone who exhibits some facet of transphobia is a TERF, and it is not helpful to suggest that this is the case. -- source link
