22 Iyar - Commandment of Shabbos - 1312 BCEOn this day in 1312 BCE, the Jewish people were given their first commandment related to Shabbos. The manna from heaven had been falling daily for a week. Now it was Friday and a double portion fell. Moshe told the Jews to collect double the amount to eat on Shabbos, and that they could not collect on the holy day. Still, there would be those who would test both G-d and Moshe and try collecting the manna on Shabbos. They would find nothing. This is one of only two direct references in the Torah to prohibited activities on Shabbos. The other is that we are told not to light a fire on Shabbos. The rest of the 39 prohibited activities of Shabbos are derived from the activities used to build the Mishkan. We are supposed to emulate the Almighty on Shabbos. On the 7th day, He stopped creating the world. The Mishkan is considered a microcosm of the world. So, by avoiding the activities that went into building the Mishkan we are coming as close as a human can to refraining from creating worlds.Rabbi Pinchas L. Landis -- source link
