thechildrensmuseum: A Daruma doll is a round-shaped paper Japanese doll named after the monk who founded Zen Buddhism over 1500 years ago. They are known as “wishing dolls” but are meant to represent the determination and actions of the wisher in order to make the wish come true. The dolls are sold with blank eyes and when a wish is made, one pupil is filled in. The second eye is only painted in when the wish has been fulfilled. -- source link
