Afonso, Prince of Beira & Mar (the Sea) Prince of Beira is a title given to the heir apparent of the Portuguese crown, and a title still given to this day, even though we are now a Republic, since House of Braganza still exists. Beira was one of the 6 traditional provinces of Portugal. Through the years its name and territory have been changed repeatedly and the “Beiras” are now 3 subregions of Portugal, closest to the border with Spain and farthest from the ocean (There’s still what we call the Beira Litoral, which is next to the ocean, but it is no longer a province, just a postal region) I discovered this title when I was bored out of my mind doing volunteer work for a museum and I thought it would be really cute if the Prince longed for the Sea all his life and fell in love with it even though the Portuguese crown had multiple places to live, most of them close to the sea shhhh let me enjoy myself shut up. So yeah Mar is just “sea” in Portuguese, and yeah I don’t think there’s any sea in contact with our territory but the ocean doesn’t sound as catchy. Mar is the sea and they’re bubbly (ahah get it) and excitable and I should totally be doing something else but this is the first time I have lore for my OCs lel -- source link
