yeoldenews:yeoldenews:“I have set my heart on the Prom and if any thing keeps me from it there will be pieces of it (heart) all over the state.”Teenagers have always been teenagers. Even in 1897.(source: Letter from Rachel to Will dated September 17, 1897.)The prom saga continues (this whole subplot honestly may be my favorite so far)…November 18, 1897 “If I don’t come to the Prom, you needn’t thinkit is because I don’t want to for I would be hardly a human girl if Ipreferred to stay at a dull old school to going to a dance.” At some point in early January Rachel’s request to travel from her boarding school in Philadelphia to Yale for prom was denied by her headmistress Miss Bennett (I’m guessing because Rachel may not have been the most dedicated student). She had a lot of feelings about this…January 10, 1898“There is another girl here from Cleveland who was invited tothe Prom Xmas and who is bound to go. Ifshe gets permission I shall not take it very meekly.”January 20, 1898 (we have now entered the anger stage)“Your letter telling of the Prom so near at handmakes me absolutely pugilistic” “Clara Rust, who is denied the pleasurealso, was in here when your letter came, and I read her that part in which you told ofcoming gaieties…we are going to hold a mourning meeting thenight of the affair.” “I am sitting at Miss Bennett’stable now and it makes me mad to sit and have to look at her and listen toher gabble… I am thinking seriously of scalping her orgiving her a cup of cold poison.” “Your loving butheartbroken, Rae“January 24, 1898“Well I ‘spose you are gadding around with your Prom girlsto-day and having a fine time. I am furiousand raging because I’m not there.”January 26, 1898 (we have moved on from anger to depression)“Oh, dear it makes me sorrowful, just to think of the perfecttime I might be having with you to-night. Idon’t think Miss Bennett knew what suffering she was causing or she would havelet her old heart melt.” “I am awfully glad you are having such a fine time andhope you are delighted with your girl. It’s very sweet of you to wish I werethere.”“I never felt more like breaking out of prison inmy life than I do to-night and to-morrow night if you see a mild disheveled personage making for youdon’t be frightened to find me.”“Miss B. says disappointments are good forpeople. I fail to see wherein this will do me good.” “In an indigo ocean, Rae”The next letter I can find from her wasn’t sent until over a month later, March 6th. She apologizes to Will for not writing sooner and then goes right into talking about what actors she’s seen recently (Sol Smith Russell this time), so it seems she had managed to bravely move on from her harrowing trauma by that point. -- source link
