|< // << // >> // >|They were still standing outside, discussing a variety of things - religious, political and completely mundane - when Sobiesław’s eyes suddenly landed on Anastazja, running around with the laundry. The girl looked a bit dizzy, probably from hecticly trying to do all her chores, but still as pretty as always. A sudden thought came to Sobiesław’s mind - and he looked at Paszko with new interest.‘Tell me, Paszko’, he said, suddenly dropping the current topic, ‘have you ever wanted to get married?’Paszko looked at him, bewildered.‘I’ve never given it much thought’, he admitted. ‘I’m not opposed to the idea. But I’m doing just fine without a wife too’.‘Well, how would you feel about that young woman who’s passing by right now?’ asked Sobiesław, not willing to give up so easily. ‘She’s a gift from our dear chief Drogowit - to show that he doesn’t hate me even though he won’t marry my daughter. A very serious and humble girl. A bit younger than you. I promised to find her a good husband, you know’, he added, with just a little extra pressure.Paszko looked at Anastazja with some interest. The girl was really outstandingly pretty - probably prettier than any other young woman in the tribe. But there was something more about her than just the pretty face: some air of sombreness and selflessness, very similar to his own. He didn’t really need a wife… But it wasn’t like having one would hurt him in any way either. No, he wasn’t opposed to the idea, definitely not. Actually, the longer he kept staring at the young woman, the less opposed he was. While he was still contemplating his answer, Sobiesław already called the girl over and left the couple alone, so that they could talk freely. And they did. It wasn’t a long conversation, with both of them being rather reserved and feeling extra awkward in this situation, but long enough for Paszko to realise that his first impression wasn’t wrong. Now that he saw Anastazja right in front of him, he found her absolutely beautiful. He liked her soft voice, her shyness, the little smile on her face. And most of all: the clumsy way in which she was trying to conceal her own interest in him.And so Anastazja left the house of the high chief only after a couple of months, moving to the little room behind the temple instead. Neither her nor Paszko were sure how they felt about it. It was all so weird: joy and hope were mixed with fear and the overwhelming feeling that there’s no coming back. If that was a wrong decision then they’d have to live with its consequences for the rest of their lives. The thought was petrifying. But at the same time… Why should they assume things will go wrong? There was a chance they’d be happy - and they both enjoyed that faint glimmer of hope. -- source link
