NORTHEAST USA: HURRICANE IDA BATTERS THE NEThe remnants of Hurricane Ida swept into the mid-Atlantic and New England overnight, bringing damaging winds and deadly flooding to New York City and its metro area. The National Weather Service issued its first-ever Flash Flooding Emergency for New York City, and recorded an all-time record of 3.15 in (8 cm) of rain in one hour in Central Park.Eight people from across the region are confirmed dead from the flooding, which produced myriad videos on social media of inundated streets and torrents rushing through New York City subway stations. In the Philadelphia suburbs in southern New Jersey, two tornadoes touched down, shattering homes and leaving tens of thousands of homes and businesses without power.
