The “Poor-Whores Petition,” a satirical letter written in England in 1668 during the Bawdy-House Riots. These riots, as the name indicates, generally targeted houses of prostitution and prostitutes themselves. The riots were an expression of resistance to Charles II, who was suspected of leaning toward Catholicism and whose support of the brothels was seen as continental Catholic decadence. This “petition” was written to Lady Castlemaine (addressed as “the most Splendid, Illustrious, Serene, and Eminent Lady of Pleasure”), the king’s mistress, asking her to help her natural allies among the “Whores, Bawds, [and] Pimps.”{WHF} {HTE} -- source link
