solarscholarsofmagick: As much as we want to avoid it, most of us will encounter magickal burnout at least once throughout our journey. We feel so passionately towards the craft and enjoy it so much that we forget that it takes energy for it to work. Unfortunately, we have a finite amount of energy within us, and when we spend more than we can regenerate, burnout can easily creep up on us.Do I have magickal burnout? You know that you have magickal burnout when simple magick work becomes increasingly difficult. You will generally feel drained while you work, which can cause your spells to be unstable with unintended results. Results from divination will start to become unclear and you will be more susceptible to negative energy, as your wards/barriers will be considerably weakened. You might not even have the drive to perform magickal work at all!How does magickal burnout happen?Magick, like any other activity or hobby, must be performed in moderation. An athlete who practices without rest will hurt their muscles and pass out from exhaustion. A student who skips sleep regularly to study will be too tired and unfocused to do well on a test. Witchcraft is no different. Each witch is different, but I generally see, especially for those new to the craft, that you should perform no more than 3 spells a week. You should also pay attention to how often you are performing divination as it contributes to burnout as well, though not as noticeable. Once daily for oneself is recommended to keep one’s divination skills honed, but performing multiple daily- especially for others- can be exhausting.I have burnout. What do I do now?Just as a torn muscle takes a while to heal, getting over burnout is not something that happens overnight. This can be particularly frustrating, but it is very important to be patient with yourself. You should absolutely begin with a simple cleansing of yourself and your living/working area. Before we can move forward to heal, we must first get rid of any potential negative energies that might impede your healing process. If you did not have a regular meditation routine, this is the time to establish one. Meditation helps us with our energy intake and control, which will help speed up the recovery process. You will also need to take some time off from performing spells, as well as divination for others. However, don’t worry about being bored or fearing that you will fall out of the craft; there are lots of particularly witchy things that you can do while on your break. This can include things such as researching areas of the craft that you are not familiar with, writing in your grimoire, re-decorating your altar, and cooking with correspondences in mind. Here are some other little things you can do that might help:Take a walk in nature.Participate in a Reiki session.Surround yourself with scents of lavender, such as bath salts, candles, air fresheners, etc.If you are able, try to allow yourself to get a healthy 6-9 hours of sleep.Take some time to enjoy other hobbies that make you happy.Listen to your favorite music.Avoid any heavy stressors like tragic world news and subjects that make you upset as much as possible.Catch up on any neglected work or chores that need to be done. Please keep in mind that some symptoms of magickal burnout are similar to those of Major Depressive Disorder as well as other mental illnesses. If this feeling is prolonged and/or you feel like you are a danger to yourself, please seek out professional help -- source link
