In Vinland Asatro circles the Ægishjálmur is used as a symbol of identification of like minded folk and also as a decorative symbol. When worn as a talisman it extends it’s effect of protection, inspiration. The Ægishjálmur symbol is an Icelandic Runic stave formed through the combination of several Algiz /Elhaz runes rotated around a central point, with additional lines inscribed along each rune branch, creating a runic configuration which is meant to inspire awe. Algiz is a rune of protection, repeating it 8 times around a centre serves the purpose of blocking or evading attacks from all directions, both the obvious and the concealed. In essence, it’s meant to protect both the body and the mind. Helm of Awe is also known as Helm of Terror or a Helm of Fear, as it was used to create a sense of awe and to capture the gaze of an onlooker to the extent of distracting their vision, which is why it was worn on shields and the central line of a helmet, so that it could be seen. Please remember to make your choice of cord.
