themeparkart: “Sci-Fi City” Tim Delaney & Christian Hope As it seems to have been for most Disney Tomorrowlands, the Tokyo Tomorrowland of the 90s was a time of growing pains and outdatedness. The Imagineers were tasked by OLC with refreshing the area, and the concept proposed was Sci-Fi City. This thriving, retro comic book vision of tomorrow would have given the area a concrete time period and an aesthetic and vibe all its own. Guests would experience the first iteration of Hyperspace Mountain, (though void of any Star Wars connection) Rockit Bikes, (a similar attraction to Disneyland’s failed Rocket Rods) as well as an interactive “Sci-Fi Zoo” where guests could meet and touch foreign creatures from around the galaxy. In addition to other new attractions, eateries and shops, the redo would take visual inspiration from sci-fi icons such as Mad Max, Blade Runner, Metropolis, Buck Rogers, and The Rocketeer. Unfortunately this ambitious refresh never came to be due to funds allocated to other Tokyo Disney projects. However, Tokyo’s Tomorrowland remains in need of an identity, and perhaps this project will be dusted off once and for all! Art ©️Disney -- source link
