love this slide by @courtneyahndesign on being white presenting/white passing, whatever term you use. what are your thoughts? “let’s talk about the term ✨#whitepassing✨ ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ If you’ve been following me for a while you’ve probably heard me use this term in reference to myself quite often! White passing is used to describe when you are perceived incorrectly as white (usually due to your appearance). For me, it’s because I’m #mixed & quite #lightskinned as a result! But there’s a few things to note here on being white passing: 1) it’s not always permanent & depends largely on the environment - I certainly was not white passing when I grew up in an all white small town but I definitely was when I moved into a bigger, more diverse city around other POC. 2) Much of what people consider the “mannerism” side of white passing is simply just white supremacy & #racialprejudice, like “You sound so white though!” or “You don’t dress like an Asian person!” so I typically focus just on appearance alone. 3) #Beingwhitepassing does not exempt you from the effects of systemic racism although it may affect how & when you experience them. But the reason why so many people use this term (including myself!) is because it’s a crucial part in understanding the spectrum of #racism. When #POC are perceived as white they are granted privileges over non white passing POC that white folks frequently experience - less harassment & overt racism, easier access to white-dominated spaces, you name it. That’s why it’s incredibly important to note in more nuanced conversations on race & is often included along with the idea of colorism, or how dark skinned POC face more severe racism than light skinned POC. But let me tell you when it’s not helpful to bring up… 1) As a white person pointing it out to a POC (this isn’t your place y’all!) 2) To make the point that someone isn’t ____ (Black, Asian, etc) enough because of the way they look! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ As always, this is not meant to be a comprehensive guide but a starting point for learning & further research on the topic” #mixedgirlproblems #whitepresenting https://www.instagram.com/p/CcbXIYAuN7t/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI= -- source link
