queerhawkeye:[Caption: a screencap of Andrew Wheeler’s twitter profile.]After comics writer [Dan Slott] tweeted a (now deleted) comment suggesting that Andrew Wheeler was somehow implied/directly guilty of sending death threats to [Nick Spencer], both Nick and a good number of their followers (Slott has 80k and Spencer 18k, white Wheeler has around 5k) started attacking Wheeler.Andrew Wheeler is an openly gay comics writer and critic who (as Nick Spencer knew) suffers from depression, and sending their followers to harass him was a nasty move. Below are some of his tweets.@Wheeler, May 31: “Nick Spencer followed me until today. He knows I’m struggling with depression, but he decided to paint a target on me anyway.”@Wheeler, May 31: “If your response to people’s expressions of pain is to try to launch a harassment campaign against them, well, hail Hydra to you too, buddy.”@Wheeler, May 31: “Oh, of COURSE it started with Dan Slott being the Rich Johnston of comic creators. (Apologies to Rich.)”@Wheeler, May 31: “Maybe I should be kinder to Nick; he fell into Dan Slott’s trap of misrepresenting my comments to stir up outrage.”@Wheeler, May 31: “Dan Slott implicated me in a death threat just to be sensationalistic. Remember that the next time he talks about ethical reporting.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I know what it means to feel unsafe. I don’t take this shit lightly. It’s not a weapon to win a fucking argument.”@Wheeler, May 31: “And don’t front that you take harassment seriously when your whole schtick is quote-tweeting people you disagree with to your followers.”@Wheeler, May 31: “With great power comes great responsibility. I read that somewhere.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I’m sorry to do this, but so there’s no doubt, let me reiterate my actual stated positions of the past week.”@Wheeler, May 31: I’ve criticized “don’t you know how comics work” as a patronising gatekeeping technique mainly used against female fans.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I’ve criticized creators for closing ranks and ignoring or mocking the pain of their readers, and I’ve called on them to listen.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I’ve criticized the conflation of marginalized voices with entitlement culture, and the dismissal of all critics based on the worst of them.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I’ve criticized the idea that writers/creators are beyond criticism, and the various tactics used to dismiss or demean critics.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I’ve criticized an article that I think was elitist and full of false equivalencies and barely coded sexism.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I said I thought Steve Rogers #1 was insensitive and out of touch. I also said that there was clearly more story yet to emerge.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I’ve mocked the idea that creators are sacrosanct. I’ve also made other jokes, eg. Galactus joining PETA, or Cap having a gay brother.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I have said that threats and harassment are unacceptable, and I have disavowed the people making those threats.”@Wheeler, May 31: “I think that’s the sum of it. I stand by it. I don’t think I’ve crossed the line. I don’t think I’ve treated creators like punching bags.”@Wheeler, 18 hours ago: “Let’s rescue comics from the notion that cishet white men are comics.” -- source link
