artofthedarkages:“Turn Your Ears to the Words of My Mouth in the Utrecht Psalter” An illumination in a psalter of Psalm 78 depicting a crowd of figures around a bearded man reading off of a lectern and mimicking the Hand of God above him. A king, warrior, or shepherd is hieratically emphasized in front of the crowd. The old man is probably Asaph, the psalmist, whose name in Hebrew means ‘to gather around’. The miniature is a dramatization of the opening lines of the psalm, when the psalmist calls for his people to listen to his words. Ink on vellum. Made in the mid 800s at a Carolingian royal court. Style is typical of Rheims School illumination. Currently held in the Utrecht University Library. -- source link
